Your Guidebook to Zippers

When it comes to selecting zippers for your projects, understanding the different varieties available can make all the difference. From coil zippers to marine zippers and beyond, each type serves a specific purpose, offering unique features and benefits tailored to different applications. Let's break down some common types of zippers and their uses:

Coil Zippers

Coil zippers are prized for their versatility and flexibility, making them ideal for a range of applications such as furniture upholstery and cushion covers. While they offer water resistance and fire retardancy, their sewn-on teeth mean they may not withstand prolonged exposure to sunlight, making them less suitable for marine use.

Marine Zippers

Designed specifically for marine applications, these zippers feature plastic teeth to resist rust and corrosion. They are UV and corrosion-resistant, making them perfect for boat covers and other marine projects. The teeth are molded to the zipper tape, rather than sewn, to ensure durability in marine environments.

Aluminum Zippers

Aluminum zipper chains are known for their strength and durability, making them popular choices for workwear and jeans. While they can be used for furniture upholstery, they are not recommended for outdoor projects due to oxidation when exposed to the elements.

Separating Zippers

Also known as jacket zippers, marine separating zippers are commonly used in marine enclosures and boat covers. They are designed to completely come apart, with sizes ranging from 24” to 120” long to suit different projects. Double pull options allow for easy opening and closing from both sides of the enclosure. Additionally, coil separating zippers are offered in select sizes, delivering the flexibility required for projects like convertible and Jeep tops.

Slides / Pulls

Single Pulls  Double Pulls

No zipper is complete with a reliable slide (or pull).  Single pull slides are versatile and suitable for various applications, while double pull slides are ideal for marine enclosures and other projects requiring access from both sides. Pulls can be made from plastic or metal, each offering its own advantages.

How to Size Zippers

Feeling stumped about zipper sizes? Fear not! Measuring your zipper is easier than you think. Simply close the zipper so the teeth are locked together, then grab a ruler, measuring tape, or caliper, and measure just the teeth of the closed zipper in millimeters. The size of the zipper corresponds to the number, so a 10mm zipper will be a #10 zipper chain.

  • Size 4, 4.5, and 5 zippers are typically used in furniture applications such as pillow covers and couch cushions.
  • Size 10 zippers are commonly found in boat covers, convertible and Jeep tops, and marine enclosures.

By understanding the characteristics and applications of different zipper types, you can confidently choose the right zipper for your next project. Whether it's for marine use, furniture upholstery, or clothing, there's a zipper designed to meet your specific needs. So, the next time you're faced with the question of which zipper to choose, you'll be equipped with the knowledge to make the perfect selection.
