sew foam 101

Published: May 6, 2026

Sew foam, also known as scrim foam or pleating foam, is a staple material in modern upholstery, especially when it comes to creating pleated, quilted, or channeled designs. Built with a t-shirt or brushed tricot backing, sew foam is specifically engineered to hold stitches without pulling through the foam. This allows upholsterers to sew directly into the material, forming clean, consistent patterns in various applications from automotive seating to motorcycles, boats, and more!

Unlike traditional cushion foam, sew foam is not meant to provide primary support. Instead, it acts as a top-layer material that adds a layer of padding, softens hard edges, and enhances the overall look of a finished piece. By giving structure and dimension to stitched patterns, sew foam plays a key role in achieving that professional, padded appearance seen in custom interiors.

At Albright’s Supply, we offer a range of sew foam options to suit different applications, preferences, and performance needs. From economical solutions to premium and specialty materials, each type is designed to support specific upholstery goals while maintaining ease of use during fabrication.

Our Economy/Regular sew foam options provide a reliable, cost-effective solution for general pleating, quilting, and padding. Available in both 1/4" and 1/2" thicknesses, these foams are well-suited for everyday upholstery projects. While the color and density may vary, they deliver solid performance for standard applications.

For those looking for consistency in both appearance and performance, white sew foam offers a uniform option. Available in a 1/4" thickness, it maintains a consistent 1.4 lb density and 50 lb compression, making it a dependable choice for projects that require predictable results. It is also compliant with Proposition 65* guidelines and manufactured to meet California Technical Bulletin 117** flammability standards.

Pink sew foam is another consistent option, offering slightly higher density and compression for added structure. Available in 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" thicknesses, it provides flexibility depending on the desired depth of pleating or quilting. With a 1.5 lb density and 60 lb compression, pink sew foam strikes a balance between softness and support, while also meeting Prop 65* and TB117** standards.

For projects that demand sharper definition and more pronounced design elements, Super Premium Purple sew foam delivers enhanced performance. With a denser composition—featuring a 1.8 lb density and 75 lb compression—this foam is ideal for achieving crisp diamonds, bold pleats, and highly detailed stitch patterns. Available in both 1/8" and 1/2" thicknesses, it is a strong choice for custom automotive interiors and specialty upholstery where visual impact matters.

When working in marine environments or other moisture-prone applications, Blue Marine Grade sew foam offers added protection. Available in 1/4" and 1/2" thicknesses, this foam maintains a consistent structure (1.4lb Density, 50lb Compresion) while incorporating antimicrobial properties to help resist mold and mildew, as well as being pink stain resistant.

An important note, no matter the type, all sew foam is shipped compressed for efficiency. It is important to open the material immediately upon arrival and allow it to expand for approximately 24 hours before use to ensure optimal performance.

Understanding the differences between sew foam options allows upholsterers to better match materials to their specific applications. Whether the goal is cost efficiency, consistent performance, enhanced definition, or environmental durability, the right sew foam provides the foundation needed to bring upholstery designs to life.

* Proposition 65 (Prop 65) requires businesses to disclose if products contain listed chemicals above safe exposure levels; products below those levels are considered compliant without a warning label.
