Quick Guide to Fasteners
Whether you're working on boat covers, awnings, bags, or tarps, choosing the right fastener ensures your project stays secure, functional, and professional. At Albright’s Supply, we carry a variety of snap fasteners designed for strength, durability, and ease of use. Let’s take a closer look at some of the most common types and what sets them apart.
Durable Fasteners (Snap Fasteners)
Durable Fasteners, also known simply as Snap Fasteners, are essential for canvas and marine applications. A complete snap set includes four parts: the button, socket, eyelet, and stud. In cloth-to-cloth installations, all four are used—two parts on each side. For cloth-to-surface applications, the stud is usually mounted directly to a hard surface using a screw, or you can opt for a screw stud with a built-in screw, eliminating the need for an eyelet.
These snaps are available in nickel-plated brass, stainless steel, and military black. All are suited for marine environments, but stainless steel offers slightly more strength, while the military black gives a sleek, matte finish. For projects that require a smaller, less noticeable snap, we also offer a “baby” size version.
Also known as Pull-the-DOT fasteners, these are designed to release only when pulled in one specific direction. This makes them ideal for high-tension areas, as they can withstand force from three sides without coming undone. Installation requires careful alignment, but the result is a fastener that stays put, even in rough conditions. One Way fasteners are available in nickel-plated brass and are commonly used on boat enclosures and other marine gear.
For heavy-duty applications, Lift-the-DOT fasteners provide serious holding power. They lock securely on three sides and open only by lifting the fourth, which makes them both strong and tamper-resistant. Constructed from brass and other non-corrosive metals, these fasteners are ideal for marine settings where exposure to salt and moisture is a constant challenge. They're a favorite for boat covers, side curtains, and other demanding fabric projects.
Use the Lift the Dot Hand Punch to create perfectly aligned holes for the socket to fit into for easy installation.
Sometimes called Murphy fasteners, turn fasteners, or directional fasteners, these snaps are known for their reliability and ease of use. Each one includes a spring mechanism that holds the fastener under tension until it's manually turned and released. They're perfect for high-stress applications and can secure up to five layers of canvas, making them especially useful in marine and upholstery projects.
These fasteners work well on both hard and soft surfaces and are often found on dodgers, boom covers, awnings, tarps, and even bags and purses. For clean, professional installation, use the Common Sense Hand Punch which creates perfectly aligned holes for the eyelet to fit into.
